This competition called for a refurbishment and extension of the current Architects' Association building in downtown Lisbon. The brief's program was to provide new classrooms, a multifunctional gallery space, and a public restaurant. The restaurant is located in the western, public-facing corner set within the two existing facades, which are proposed to be demolished and reconstructed in a symbolic gesture of regeneration. The remaining program unfolds in an almost-Brutalist 'sculpture' above a covered courtyard, presenting itself as a phoenix that is reborn from the rubble (just like Pombaline Lisbon, which in the post-earthquake was re-built on itself, heralding innovation and a new identity).
